Choosing Reliable Tradesmen

Enfield Council has launched a new scheme to help residents find a reputable trader. 'Enfield's Building Confidence Scheme', is a list of local traders, including builders, plumbers, electricians and other trades. Before they can be accepted onto the scheme traders have to show:

  • 5 different references for works carried out in the 18 months prior to seeking membership to the scheme;
  • Membership of any trade or professional body;
  • Employer's Liability insurance (£5,000,000);
  • Public liability insurance (£3,000,000);
  • Professional Indemnity insurance, where applicable (£1,000,000)

In addition to the above, members must show that they can provide an acceptable standard of customer satisfaction, incorporating at all times a courteous and polite attitude to customers by all staff.

After work is undertaken the council also invites those who have used the service to feedback to the council, about how good the traders were. In addition, if you have a problem with a trader on the list the council will look into your complaint for you.

The Council reserves the right to refuse or revoke membership.

Traders are also invited to put themselves forward to be on the list.

Tips on hiring workmen

  • Ask friends and family to recommend a worker
  • Get three quotes from different companies to compare costs and attitude. For costly projects ask for references of previous customers.
  • Never pay cash before they do the job – no matter what reason they give.
  • They should have all the equipment and materials they need - otherwise they should not be in the trade!
  • Never let workers know that you have cash in your house.
  • Never accept a lift from workmen to go and get cash.
  • Always remain in your home when they are working
  • Never give workmen the keys to your house.
  • Shut/lock rooms which they are not working in

If you are unhappy with their work, ask your family for help or contact the Council's Trading Standards department for advice (020 8379 1000)
